Sleep No More

How do you describe Sleep No More? Officially speaking, it’s an “indoor promenade performance” or an interactive play.  Unofficially, it’s a cross between Eyes Wide Shut and a haunted house. Punchdrunk took over a warehouse in Chelsea and recreated the abandoned McKittrick Hotel, where silent scenes from Shakespeare’s MacBeth are acted out in broken sequence.  “Audiences move freely through a transporting world at their own pace, choosing their own path through the story, immersed in the most unique theatrical experience in the history of New York.”  Attendees are required to wear the below white masks throughout the hotel, while exploring several floors, winding passages and hidden rooms.  It’s creepy, weird, and totally awesome.  Do it.

Some advice:

  • Don’t pay too much attention to reviews.  Everyone’s experience is different.
  • Don’t listen to those who say you shouldn’t wear heels.  I was running around in 5-inch stilettos and was fine.  However, some of the floors are a little dusty, so don’t freak out if your Loubs are a little less shiny when you leave.
  • Have a shot of absinthe in the speakeasy before you enter.
  • Choose who you attend with wisely.  A poorly chosen partner will affect your experience. That said, there are lots of secret little spots to explore with the right person.  Use your imagination.
  • Don’t run after the crowds.  Wacky stuff is happening everywhere.  Though sometimes the crowds are running for a reason.
  • Play around with the sets.  There’s some weird crap in there.

Sleep No More.  DO IT.

Hi, I'm Koren! I started this blog back in 2012, when I was an unhappy lawyer living in New York City. I needed a creative outlet, and I've always loved writing, photography, and travel. Little did I know, this blog would end up changing my life! Since then, I've moved to California and done a total life and career transformation. After a five-year hiatus, I'm excited to share recent photography here.
