Maryland Crabs in Manhattan

City Gal is a native New Englander.  I grew up eating lobster.  I never ate a real crab until I was almost 20 years old at a crab house in Bethesda.  I was hooked.  Eating crabs once or twice a summer throughout the seven years I lived in Maryland was a definite highlight, and probably what I miss most about living there.  Not many authentic crab houses north of Maryland (especially not in New York City).  So, when a friend told me that Back Forty in the East Village  served authentic Maryland crabs every Tuesday in the summer, I immediately made a reservation!

For $60, eager patrons are served cornbread, corn on the cob, potatoes and unlimited Maryland crabs.  Yes, unlimited!  Tax and gratuity are included in the price.  (Sorry folks, you have to pay for the beer!  Pitchers of Sixpoint Sehr Crisp Lager are $15.)

Round one.  Table still neat.  Hands still clean.

Many rounds later.

The aftermath.  Full belly.  Slight buzz.  Many broken nails.

In spite of my satisfied appetite, my sweet tooth couldn’t pass up this summer fruit cobbler.

Crab boils are scheduled every Tuesday through the summer.  Tickets go on sale the Wednesday before.  And, the week prior to Labor Day, crab boils are scheduled every night!  Check here for new dates, and make sure to book your tickets in advance!

Hi, I'm Koren! I started this blog back in 2012, when I was an unhappy lawyer living in New York City. I needed a creative outlet, and I've always loved writing, photography, and travel. Little did I know, this blog would end up changing my life! Since then, I've moved to California and done a total life and career transformation. After a five-year hiatus, I'm excited to share recent photography here.
