Old Phuket Town, Thailand

It’s no secret that Phuket isn’t my favorite place in Thailand.  Though there are some nice beaches, they don’t compare to beaches in other parts of Thailand, and it’s incredibly touristy.  The real gem of Phuket – Phuket Town – is usually passed over in favor of crowded beaches and oceanfront hotels.  Old Phuket Town is made up of a few streets with pastel-colored Sino-Portuguese buildings, reflecting Phuket’s long and distinct history.  Soi Romanee, the most picturesque road in the heart of Old Phuket Town, is filled with quaint shops and cafes.  Once a red light district for Chinese tin mining workers, Soi Romanee and the surrounding streets in Old Phuket Town recently underwent a facelift – electric and telephone wires were moved underground, buildings were restored, and new life was breathed into a worn area.  Phuket Town is home to one of the best night markets in Thailand and is worth a trip if you find yourself in Phuket.

Hi, I'm Koren! I started this blog back in 2012, when I was an unhappy lawyer living in New York City. I needed a creative outlet, and I've always loved writing, photography, and travel. Little did I know, this blog would end up changing my life! Since then, I've moved to California and done a total life and career transformation. After a five-year hiatus, I'm excited to share recent photography here.

  • Your statements about Phuket town are indeed correct. However, I would take issue with you regarding the rest of Phuket. True, Patong, Kata and Karon are full of tourists and some rather unsavoury nightlife. However, some of the beaches to the north such as Bang Tao, Layan, Nai Thon and Nai Yang are quiet, incredibly beautiful and among Thiland’s best. There are also a number of small beaches that need to be sought out that are also quiet and beautiful.

I also hope you will take my next comment as constructive criticism. Your photos are over processed with the consequence that they are dull and lifeless althogh there is generally nothing wrong with the composition.

    • Thank you for your comment! There are certainly nice beaches in Phuket and this post was not meant to deter anyone from visiting Phuket. The point of the post was to speak to those who visit Phuket and skip what some feel is the most unique part of Phuket – Phuket Town – in favor of large resorts in touristy areas.

Regarding the photos – there were a few photos uploaded from an iPad app and it muddled the composition and caused them to appear grainy/over processed. I just swapped them out for the original versions, and appreciate you calling that to our attention!
